Wildcats head to NCAA Mountain RegionalsPublished by
OGDEN, Utah The Weber State men's and women's cross country team will have a chance to punch their ticket to the NCAA Championships this weekend. They will head to Albuquerque, New Mexico to take part in the NCAA Mountain Region cross country championships on Friday morning.
lt;br />Both teams hope to build off their solid performances at the Big Sky Championships two weeks ago. But both teams are going to have to run complete races to get themselves into the championships.
lt;br />The Mountain Region Is considered to be one of the hardest regions especially on the men's side. The defending national champions and top ranked Colorado will see competition from Northern Arizona, New Mexico and Southern Utah.
lt;br />The women will see fierce competition from UNM, CU and Brigham Young.
lt;br />The men's team hasn't qualified for the NCAA Championships since 1999. Seth Pilkington was the last Wildcat to qualify individually when he placed 26th in 2007. But that team is looking to change that this weekend, being lead by a duo of seniors. Mike Hardy and Trevor Ricks have been the team's top two runners all season including earning All-Conferences honors, placing fifth and ninth respectively. Tip Worob and Tyler Robinson have both ran well and been in the top five all season.
lt;br />If they are to going to beat teams like Southern Utah and Colorado State, they will rely heavily on their fifth runner. Preston Johnson and Jason Kearns will be relied on heavily if the Wildcats are going to crash the party.
lt;br />The women's team will look to return the NCAA Championships after a one-year absence. Jamie Stokes, Ellie Child and Hailey Ricks have been the top three runners for the women's team all season. Stokes and Child both earned All-Conference honors two weeks ago and will be looked at to lead the team again.
