Beijing Olympics second Day results

The men's 100 meters was the center event of the second day but there were three other finals and important heats and qualifications.  In the morning Russian 20km race walker  Veleriy Borchin won a close competition against 3x world champion and 1996 Olympic champion Jefferson Perez and young (24) Australian star Jared Tallent.

In qualifying Americans Jillian Camarena and Michelle Carter surprised by qualifying for the Shot Put final.  All the favorites including 2007 World champion Valerie Vili of New Zealand made the final. All of the favorites of the men's 3,000 meter steeplechase made the final and OT champion Anthony Famiglietti went out fast (2:40 first k and 5:31 for 2ks) to try to ensure a place in the final.  He was caught in the last lap but made the final and pr'd at 8:17.34. 

The women's Heptathlon became a nightmare for Hyleas Fountain.  She had pr'd and won on the first day in three of the four events and was on pr pace with 4060 points.  Ukraine's  Nataliya Dobrynska had also pr'd in three of four events and had won the fourth event, shot put, and totaled 3996 for second.  2007 World and 2004 Olympic Bronze medallist Kelly Sotherton of Great Britain was in third at 3938 points and 2007 World silver medallist Lyudmila Blonska of Ukraine was fifth wioth 3912 points.  Jackie Johnson of the US was 22nd at 3592 points.  Fountain had two fouls in the first event, the long jump, and on her third attempt on Gay
