Important Newcomers and Changes for Men's NCAA D1 Cross Country

1. Oklahoma State (#1 '10 NC XC) - Shadrack Kipchirir transferred after his freshman year at Western Kentucky.  Last year he finished 27th at the NCAA meet, not sure if he is eligible.  Three high level freshmen - Justin Villhauer was fourth at the US junior cross country championships and 47th at the world junior meet.  He ran 15:02 for 5k XC and 9:02.71 for 3200 meters last school year, Zach Wills has run15:01 5k XC and 8:55.18 for the two-mile and Brian Gohlke ran 15:17 5k XC and 8:29.17 for 3k

2.  Wisconsin (#3 '10)- Ryan Collins transferred from Virginia for his senior year of cross country.  He was 32nd NC XC and 41st in 2009.  Senior Elliot Krause was running with Ahmed (12th) and Darling (13th) until he fell at the end of the race and finished 137th.  Reed Connor developed in track and should improve on 95th place finish

3. Stanford (#4 '10) - Four impressive freshmen added - Joe Rosa 14:13.68 5k on the track and 8:54.46 2-m (#3 US HS), Jim Rosa 15:15 5k XC, 8:51.46 2-m indoors, Matt Carpowich 17th '10 FL, 15:01.20 5k XC

4. Iona (#8 '10)- Redshirt Senior Ryan Sheridan (12th '09 and 41st '08 NC XC, '10 redshirt) transferred to Villanova

5. Colorado (#15 '10) - Freshman Ammar Moussa ran 14:11 5k XC, 9:00.51 2-mile last year indoor and 8:51.80 outdoors (#2 US HS), senior Christian Thompson looks like he is back to 2009 XC form (44th NCAA) after having trouble last year (90th).  Redshirt Senior Richard Medina may also be back to 2009 (57th NCAA) and 2008 form (64th NCAA).  Freshman David Kilgore 15:14 5k XC and 14:50.59 5k indoors has looked good early

6. Northern Arizona (#9 '10) - Redshirt senior Jordan Chipangama returns after redshirt season (5th '09 NCAA XC) 

7. Princeton (#12 '10) - Lost two of top five but add strong freshmen class - Edward Owens 15:25 5k XC, 14:52.85 on track, Samuel Pons 14:16.44 5k #4 US HS and 14:30 5k XC, Conner Martin 9:04.29 2-m and 15:21.30 5k XC and Mike Mazzaccaro

8. Indiana (#7 '10) - Return their top 7, Graduated senior Adrien Dannemiller transferred from Cornell for his last year.  Has run an 8:40 steeplechase and was 17th in the Northeast Region last year.

9. Oklahoma (#5 '10) - Lost #3 runner, redshirt freshman Ryan Poland should help cover the loss.  He was 5th '10 US Junior XC and 56 at World Junior XC. 

10. Syracuse (#14 '10) - Strong freshman class including Ryan Urie 14:45 5k XC and Jace Lowry 14th NXN and 14:59.81 5k XC.  Return also of redshirt senior Griff Graves, 165th at 2009 NCAA XC (#6).

11. Oregon (#6 '10) - They have lost three of top five but have added a tremendous Freshmen class to fill in the holes. Rumor also that #1 Luke Puskedra (3rd '10 NC XC) and others may be injured.  Three of the freshman were in top ten at footlocker - Lukas Verzbicas (expected #2) won two consecutive FL and '10 NXN, US HS Records 2-m indoors (8:40.7) and outdoors (8:29.46), 13:54 3m XC, Ryan Pickering 9th FL, 14:55.48 5k XC, Chad Noelle 10th FL and 9:02.71 2-mile.  Sophomore Parker Stinson was tired at NC XC (121st) after running at World Juniors.  Just won third consecutive US Jr 10k title.  Redshirt sophomore Ben DeJarnette was #5 runner but DNF at NCAA. Sophomore Brian Shrader (5th '09 FL) finally seemed to adjust to increased milage by end of outdoor track season.  Other freshmen of note - Matt Jablonski 9:02.51 2-mile, Jeremy Ephraim 14:54.62 5k on track, Chris Brewer 15:05 5k XC, Mett Melancon 15:10.60 5k XC and 8:30.78 3k and Max Runia 15:13.30 5k XC and 15:20.54 5k on track.  Elias Gedyon is expected to join team for track season. 

12. Portland (#13 '10) - four of top five return, Junior Joash Osoro (67th '09 NC XC - #2) is apparently healthy enough to return this year

13. Florida State (#2 '10) - Lost two of top 5, Freshman Armando DelValle 1st NXN south, 15:00.20 5k XC

14. Villanova (#23 '10) - Redshirt Senior Ryan Sheridan transferred from Iona in the offseason.  He redshirted last year but was 12th in '09 and 41st in '08.  Redshirt senior Chris Williams was the '08 #6 runner for Georgetown and should be back this season

15. Arizona - Redshirt freshman Lawi Lalang ran faster in his debut than teammate Sambu ran on the same course.  Freshman Kenji Bierig (15:09 5k XC and 9:01.71 3200) led high school team to state title and will have to help provide a #3 runner for team that was 8th at Pac-10 last year.

16. BYU (#18 '10) - Redshirt sophomore Curtis Carr returns after mission

17. Providence (#22 '10) - Redshirt senior David McCarthy has returned.  He was 84th at '09 NCAA cross and 19th in '08.  Strong European freshman class including Irishman Shane Quinn 8:15 3k and 14:26 5k prs and 12th at 2010 Euro Jr XC and Englishman Benjamin Connor 67th at world jr XC.

18. Alabama (#11 '10) - Lost two of top five, redshirt senior (#6 in 2008) Zac Edwards returns

19. Texas (#26 '10) - Adds freshmen Craig Lutz - 3rd NXN, '09 NXN champ, 4th '09 FL, 14:34 5k XC and 8:52.91 2-mle last year, Mark Pinales 15:00.05 5k XC, and Will Antkowiak 15:07.56 5k XC. 

20. Arkansas (#10 '10) Lost two of top five - Junior Thomas C-Mason was injured much of last year and missed the NCAA meet, but was one of top three most of the year.

 

Other teams expected in top 20 but dealing with losses or no evidence they will be in top 20 yet.

NC State (20th '10) is not in top 20 because it is rumored that Senior Ryan Hill (22nd '10 NC XC) is redshirting

North Carolina may make top-20 but it will depend on three freshmen that ran at footlocker last year - Blake Williams 15th in '10 and 20th in '09, 14:52 5k XC, Jack Driggs 13th FL, 15:05.20 5k XC, and Scott Morgan 19th FL, 15:01 5k XC, 9:04.99 2-m

Virginia (17th '10) - lost top runner from last year - Ryan Collins to Wisconsin (32nd '10).
