Cross Country Sweeps USF Invitational - California Golden Bears - University of California Official Athletic SitePublished by
Cross Country Sweeps USF InvitationalPublished by California SID on September 5th, 2015 SAN FRANCISCO - The California men's and women's cross teams swept the team and individual championships at the USF Invitational to open the 2015 season Saturday at Golden Gate Park. Bethan Knights won the women's race in 17:29.1 to lead the Golden Bear women to a winning mark of 26 points. Chris Walden won the men's race in 24:24.5 to lead the Golden Bear men to a winning mark of 23 points. The Cal men blazed through the race with seven of the top 10 finishers Saturday. "It was a nice beginning.” California Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Tony Sandoval said. “It’s a good measurement to see where people are in terms of development and what we need to work on between now and when we go to Minnesota. One thing we did not do is we did not run any of our new people. They’re barely into their first week of school, so we wanted to get them accommodated first. Things will change drastically for the men and women as we blend in the new people that we’ve recruited.” The women's 5K began the day at the Speedway Meadows area of Golden Gate Park as the Bears finished 1-2-5-7-11 in the individual scoring. The next scoring finisher was Mariel Mendoza with a time of 17:50.0. Also scoring for the Bears in the team victory were Megan Bordes, Nuria Tio Peig and Natalie Herberg. California student-athlete Sydney Gray competed unattached and did not count towards a team score, but she ran the second-fastest time of the day with 17:44.1. "It was good to go out there with the rest of the team and race together,” Knights said. “It was nice being in our backyard and getting a good shakeout for the first race of the season. It was just nice to be back out here in the Cal uniform.” The men's 8K race was next on the course with Walden claiming the individual title after outpacing USF's Ryan Driscoll by two seconds at the line. A sextet of Golden Bears proceeded to claim six of the next eight spots as the Golden Bears took the convincing victory. John Lawson finished third at 24:29.8, Garrett Corcoran was fourth at 24:39.9, Trent Brendel was seventh at 24:59.4 and Steve Correa rounded out the scoring places in eighth at 24:59.7. The next two to cross the line were also Golden Bears with Thomas Joyce finishing ninth and Edward Trim finishing 10th overall. Read the full article at: www.calbears.com
