Birgen Nelson, a sophomore at Gustavus Adolphus and the reigning NCAA Division 3 women's 100-meter hurdles champion and the fastest all-conditions competitor in division history with a wind-aided 13.32 seconds in addition to being the all-time fastest division performer in the indoor 60-meter hurdles at 8.33 seconds, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss her pursuit of sweeping the 100 hurdles and 400 hurdles titles at the Division 3 outdoor championship May 25-27 at the Polisseni Track and Field Complex, hosted by St. John Fisher in Rochester, N.Y. Nelson explains how hopeful she is to be able to produce a wind-legal performance and challenge the 1998 division record of 13.60 seconds held by Bridget Cochran of Christopher Newport, since her top wind-legal mark remains 13.71. She also ranks No. 10 in division history in the 400-meter hurdles at 59.22 seconds as well as No. 20 all-time in the division in the 100-meter dash in 11.80. Nelson is attempting to become the first female athlete in division history to sweep the 60 hurdles, 100 hurdles and 400 hurdles championships in the same year, since Summer Rohrs of Frostburg State captured titles in the 55 hurdles, 100 hurdles and 400 hurdles in 2009. Rohrs is also the last Division 3 female athlete to win back-to-back championships in the 100 hurdles in 2008 and 2009. She explains her decision to not enter the 100-meter dash, choosing to focus on just the 100 hurdles and 400 hurdles, since Nelson competed in seven races May 12-13 at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship meet. Nelson expresses gratitude for Gustavus Adolphus coach Aaron Lund and his guidance and mentorship, as well as the support of teammates, and speaks about how thankful she is to have Megan Geraets, Madi Kes and Annika Poe also representing the Gusties in New York. She analyzes how significant the competition has become in Division 3, with 11 sub-14 athletes in the 100 hurdles and four sub-60 performers in the 400 hurdles. Nelson also looks forward to the next chapter of her career at Duke, where she will transfer in the fall, as well as preparing during the summer for the USATF Outdoor Championships in July at Hayward Field in Oregon.
