Michaela Rose, an LSU sophomore and the No. 2 all-time collegiate competitor in the women's outdoor 800 meters at 1:59.08 as well as the only female athlete in NCAA history to produce a pair of sub-2 performances during the regular season, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing in the 800 and 4x400-meter relay for the Tigers at the NCAA Division 1 Outdoor Championships on June 8 and 10 at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas. Rose is also one of only two female athletes in NCAA history to run sub-2 in the 800 and under 4:12 in the 1,500, along with Wisconsin standout Suzy Favor Hamilton, achieving the feat in consecutive races April 14-15 by clocking 1:59.08 and 4:11.98 at the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific University in California. She also revisits running 1:59.73 on May 13 to win the Southeastern Conference title at Bernie Moore Track and Field Stadium in Baton Rouge, and Rose explains how meaningful the support and appreciation was from the LSU fans. Rose reflects on competing in Austin the past two years in the 4x800 and distance medley relays at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, and how she is looking forward to competing at an NCAA championship meet at Mike A. Myers Stadium. She explains the lessons learned from taking third in the 800 final March 11 at the Division 1 Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, and how much Rose is looking forward to competing against Stanford's Roisin Willis, as well as Brigham Young's Claire Seymour, Kennesaw State's Sarah Hendrick and Texas' Valery Tobias once again. Rose expresses gratitude for LSU distance coach Houston Franks and the entire Tigers' coaching staff, in addition to her teammates for helping her prepare for the challenges of racing events from 400 to 1,500 meters, as well as the 400-meter hurdles. She also shares excitement for being able to compete at the USATF Outdoor Championships in July at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., and her potential for the making the American roster to race at the World Athletics Championships in August in Budapest, Hungary, after capturing a bronze medal in the 400 hurdles last year at the World U20 Championships in Cali, Colombia. Rose examines how instrumental her faith has been throughout her track and field career, and shares how she has grown spiritually, and how that has helped her improve as a student-athlete and teammate.
