Blake Haney of Stockdale High School in Bakersfield California is considered the top male distance runner heading into his senior season.  In track last year he had a fantastic season that was delayed by an injury during the cross country season.

In 2011 he was the second fastest sophomore in the country over a 3-mile cross country course (14:28 from Woodbridge).  In track he was third at Cal state 1600 in a then pr 4:11.85 and 11th in the 3200 in 9:13.08 after a then pr 8:54.65 at Arcadia (7th).

His junior season had big hopes but an IT Band injury delayed his start until the league meet.  In track he dominated.  He was third in the Arcadia 3200 in 8:48.58 (#4 US) and then won CIF titles in the 1600 (4:06.91) and 3200 (9:01.65) and was fifth at the World Youth championships in a US HS #1 3:44.69.

I had a few quick words with Blake last night.

Adam: Runnerspace.com: First question. Do you have a top 5

Blake: My top 5 are: Oregon, Stanford, Georgetown, Arizona St., and Oklahoma St

Adam: How is training going?

Blake: Training has been going very well lately. I'm very excited to race at Woodbridge this weekend

Adam: Any changes from last year to this year?

Blake: I mean not much. Since I was injured most of last season it's hard to say I changed anything but it's been the same as the past. Maybe a few core workouts and drills more but that's about it.

Adam: How much of the season did you miss or did you just limp along having to shorten workouts and miss a day here or there?

Blake: I missed probably close to 85% of the (cross country) season I ran 4 races( league champs, Area, Section, and state. This was after about 1-2 weeks of training.

Adam: What was the injury?

Blake: It was IT band injury that just kept nagging.

Adam: Any change in training or exercises to end the issue?

Blake: Just a lot of rest and some general hip strengthening exercises. Also the basic foam rolling and stretching

Adam: Thanks. Have you had fairly uninterrupted training since you recovered before league champs?

Blake: Yeah. I really haven't had to stop running unless I was taking an optional break. I have been very healthy since the injury.

Adam: How excited are you? running faster in workouts?

Blake: I'm extremely excited for the season to start! I have been doing very good workouts. They are much faster than previous workouts. Any chance we could finish this tomorrow? Thanks

Adam: Get back to me when you have time tomorrow. Thanks for your time.
